Description

My father, Muliya Mahabala Bhat, was a scholar of Yakshagana. His knowledge of the art and craft of the dance form was immense. By the mid-80s, Yakshagana was losing its authenticity. Artists were cutting corners in many aspects, such as make-up (which is elaborate and time-consuming), costumes, and even stage performances. My father, with some of his friends, such as writer and scholar Dr Raghava Nambiar, scholar Prabhakara Joshi, and others, conducted a workshop on the traditional make-up of Yakshagana near Mangalore. He invited a group of great artists and requested them to do authentic make-up and wear the right costumes, and I photographed all of them on film. We have scanned and restored all the images. The book design is almost ready. Currently, the laborious task of proofreading and corrections is going on.
